Robert D. Patrick letters, 1862.

The Robert D. Patrick Letters contain two 1862 letters by Robert Patrick to his sister, Mrs. Mary Patrick Nash. One letter from Camp St. Mary, near Corinth, Mississippi, refers to the military strength of the Federal Army in Tennessee, describes the guerrilla tactics of General Morgan, and mentions the ethnicities, including blacks, represented in the 13th Louisiana Volunteers Regiment. The other letter from Port Hudson, Louisiana, mentions Patrick's purchase of clothing, tallow and salt. The collection contains a novel by W. H. Maxwell, THE FORTUNES OF HECTOR O'HALLORAN AND HIS MAN MARK ANTHONY O'TOOLE. The book was purchased by Patrick in Baton Rouge Oct. 29, 1862.

Robert D. Patrick was the son of Reuben Woodworth Patrick (1798-1855). His sister, Mary Patrick, wed James E. Nash of Nash Plantation, near Clinton, Louisiana. Maxwell was a Irish soldier in the Napoleonic wars who retired to minister to a remote Irish parish, where he began to write Irish military and sporting novels. After some success he moved to London in the 1830s, where he produced novels, military histories and biographies, and Irish and Scottish travel-books.
